It would have changed things A LOT Xeno. Had it counted then England would not have committed as many players to the attack. They got beat for goals 3 and 4 on counterattacks because they pushed too many players up and didn't recover fast enough. Had it been 2-2 England would have kept more players behind the ball, possibly stopping the counter.

The defense looked fairly out of position even when they were back.
Although they did better later on, so yes; you're probably right.

I'm no footballer though.

On the 3rd goal, it was Lampard who tracked back but then got caught in no mans land. He is not a good defender, never has been, he should have been marking Muller instead of standing in the middle of the box. But again, had it been 2-2 my guess is that there would have been more English players behind the ball.

Seriously, that is the worst England performance I've ever seen - totally unbelievable.

They look decent, but so does the Argentinian team.
Also, you're currently in GMT (or UTC) +1, Snograt.

Just for a moment there I thought you were accusing me of being German...

Anyhoo, Netherlands dominating Slovakia in a very tedious manner, 2-1 the Dutch.

Glad the Dutch won! Wish I could have seen the match. Being part Pennsylvania Dutch I am pulling for them.

Today's matches - Paraguay defeated Japan after one missed penalty in a shootout that followed 120 minutes of astoundingly uninspired, goal-less football.

A surprise (to me, at least!) result - Spain dumped neighbours Portugal out of the cup, by the virtue of the only goal of the match. England's favourite "winker" Ronaldo barely touched the ball, thanks to lack of supply from the rest of his team.

That gives us the full list for the quarter finals:

Netherlands vs. Brazil
Uruguay vs. Ghana
Argentina vs. Germany
Paraguay vs. Spain

And I can't see myself watching any of them.

World cup is over... for me at least.

I'm pulling for the Netherlands and Germany. Otherwise meh. The only real interesting match up will probably be Germany Argentina. The Dutch usually choke at this point so Brazil should win. Spain should overpower Paraguay. Uruguay Ghana, don't really care but I guess it could be good...

It'll be a close call with some of them, but there's an outside chance of an all-South America semi final there...

I'll be rooting for Germany from here on out, considering mein deutscher Hintergrund.

Geh Deutschland! Du kannst die Welttasse gewinnen!

...or an all-South American final

I'm partial to Uruguay and hoping it's vs. Argentina. There's certainly no love lost between the two; kind of like a Bears vs. Packers or Red Sox vs. Yankees rivalry; however, I'd settle for Germany to beat Argentina this match!

^tut, typo.

Well, there goes that idea. The mighty Brazil fall to The Netherlands due to totally losing the plot in the second half. Uruguay vs. Ghana went as expected, but only by virtue of some pretty poor penalty taking by Ghana. Seriously - a one-step run up? What was the guy thinking?

Think I could miss that. Think I will go for argentina.....

Yes! The Netherlands beat Brazil! If I only I could have watched... Also heard the Ghana-Uruguay game was good, but again couldn't watch it. I hope the Netherlands finally buck the trend of failing at this level and finally win a World Cup!

Guess I'm getting my wish! Argentina forgot to bring their game...it's 3-0 Germany in the 2nd half, who are dominating the whole field... the few shots on goal by Argentina were weak and to the keeper who really didn't need to move much.

edit: make that Germany 4 : 0 Argentina ~ Final !

Hmm, at 1-0 at half time, it looked like Argentina were going to come back with a vengeance. Germany weathered the storm, however, then totally commanded the game.

I can't imagine any other team beating Germany if they continue to play like this.
